Thu, Oct 24, 2019

With the summer months behind us and some cooler months ahead, West Coast Insulation is recommending homeowners take advantage of the current grant scheme which is now the highest level it has ever been at €1,123. Homeowners can contact the Galway company for a free quotation for cavity wall and attic insulation. The grant will cover a large percentage of the costs of the work, and when ordering with West Coast Insulation, the grant comes straight off the price. Gaslight at The Meyrick

Thu, Oct 24, 2019

The Meyrick has long had a special place in the hearts of the people of Galway. Known as the Railway Hotel when it opened in 1852, and later as the Great Southern Hotel, this stately showpiece looms large over Eyre Square. In 2006 it was re-named the Hotel Meyrick in order to maintain a link to its historical background, as Eyre Square was once named Meyrick Square. The hotel then underwent a refurbishment programme intended to reinstate the grandeur and elegance of its 19th century heyday, marble flooring, high ceilings, chandeliers, and rich fabrics all contribute to recreating the grandeur of old.

Liam Mellows - tragic hero of 1916

Thu, Oct 24, 2019

On December 7 1922, Pádraic Ó Máille TD and his friend Sean Hales TD of Cork, walked out of a hotel on Ormonde Quay, by Dublin’s river Liffy. They just had lunch, and were on their way back to the Dáil in Leinster House, a short drive away. Ó Máille, Galway city and Connemara’s first TD, had been appointed Leas Ceann Comhairle (deputy speaker). As they reached their car a gunman stepped forward and opened fire. Both men were hit, but Hales was bleeding profusely. Although seriously injured Ó Máille managed to get Hales into the car and drove to the nearest hospital, where he collapsed, and died.

For a quirky refreshing break, be embraced by the AbbeyGlen.

Wed, Oct 23, 2019

There is nothing like the image of a turf fire to carry you through the wilds of winter in search of solace. Driving through Connemara last Friday night, the twilight mountains turning to dark, the moon reflecting off the glasslike lakes painting the vistas between Recess and Clifden a wonderful mixture of blue and black, I longed to arrive at my destination and to feel the heat of orange flames on my face, to lay down my weary self, and to give myself over to hosts tasked with reenergising me with fine food, fine wines, and a hearty welcome.

People of the Tribes: Meet Clíodhna.

Mon, Oct 21, 2019

Haigh, is mise Clíodhna! I was born and raised in Dublin, but I have been living in Galway since 2008. I have strong family connections to the picturesque village of Spiddal and decided to move to Galway for college, where I completed a BA in Mathematics and Nua-Ghaeilge and an MA in Nua-Ghaeilge from NUIG. I have always been interested in fashion and style, and would spend hours dressing up in my Mamó’s clothing running my own little fashion shows! I have fourteen years fashion retail experience and I am currently employed as the senior stylist and visual merchandiser in the Lanidor boutique on 30 Eyre St. One of the greatest things about working in retail is that you never know where the day is going to take you and no two days in Lanidor boutique are the same. I love helping people find their style and updating their wardrobes with new pieces from the shop. I have a very creative mind and my role in Lanidor gives me the opportunity to do a job that I am very passionate about, a place where I can let my personal creativity shine through and work off my own initiative doing a job that I love.
