OPW to host 6th Annual Honey Show this weekend

The 6th Annual Office of Public Works (OPW) Biodiversity Festival & Honey Show will take place in Phoenix Park from tomorrow Friday 9 until Sunday 11 September 2022. Tours, lectures, and family activities will take place throughout the weekend. All events are free; however, booking is required for some as places are limited.

Welcoming the announcement of the 6th Annual Phoenix Park Honey Show, Chief Park Superintendent (OPW) Margaret Gormley said: “Bees are an important aid in conserving the biodiversity of the Phoenix Park and surrounding areas.

Hurling — game of legend and of legends

Hurling is one of the oldest field games in the world. Some stories portray it as a form of military training, proficiency on the field equated with skill in battle. Legend has it that the first battle of Moytura fought about 2000 B.C. between two rival tribes, was preceded by a fierce hurling match between two teams of 27 a-side drawn from opposing forces. The casualties were buried under a huge stone cairn – a megalithic tomb. The field where the game took place is still called The Field of the Hurlers. Ancient games were also played at Tara.

Following the lunch club, the social club offers a variety of activities from bingo to floor games, musical afternoons, collaborative arts projects, chair exercise and whatever they can do to serve the interest of their participants. Lunch and social clubs are open to all older people in Galway City and County, numbers permitting.
