Looking at the photograph of Emily Anderson on this page, the only formal portrait of her other than some distant group shots, it is difficult to imagine that this interesting Galway woman was probably the best codebreaker in the British Secret Service during the First and Second World Wars.

The regular use of the words ‘litir’ and ‘post’ in 15th century Irish manuscripts suggests that by that time a postal system was already in existence in Ireland. The English postal system was completely reformed by a man named Witherings in 1638 and he was then invited to do the same in Ireland. By the 1650s, mail was being carried by post boys who walked 16 to 18 miles a day between towns. It is believed the Galway Post Office was set up in 1653 when the Cromwellians were still here. In those early years, the local postmaster was expected to provide the premises, so every time a new postmaster was appointed, it meant a new main Post Office.

Four original short animations created by Irish animators to explore and explain science research have recently been completed. The short films were created through a strand of the highly successful Science on Screen programme, a partnership between CÚRAM Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) Research Centre for Medical Devices and Ardán. The animations are the product of a new strand of CÚRAM and Ardan’s Science on Screen scheme and were launched in 2022 in association with the National Talent Academy Animation (NTAA).

After the war Commander Bill King and his wife Anita tried to settle into some kind of normal life, in a rather draughty and damp 15th century Norman castle at Oranmore. After their extraordinary experiences during the war, life in Galway was, to say the least, a disappointing end to the previous six years of dangerous living and fearful events.
