IN THE early 1980s Eva Bourke was an active participant in Galway Writers’ Workshop, when the group used to meet in a room above Taylor’s Bar.
Her debut collection, Gonella, was the very first book published by Salmon Poetry. The most important idea to emerge from that long gone room above Taylor’s is that you do not have to be dead to be a poet.

DERMOT BOLGER’S acclaimed recent play, The Parting Glass comes to the Town Hall Theatre on Tuesday May 31 and Wednesday June 1. This one-man play, performed by Ray Yeates, about a returned emigrant’s experience of contemporary Ireland in the boom to bust years, has been a hit in Dublin and New York, and now embarks on a tour of Ireland.

AS PART of the People’s History of Galway weekend at the Town Hall, the venue is hosting what promises to be a fascinating evening of seldom-seen films showing life in and around Galway from the 1940s to the 1960s. The evening is presented by IFI National in collaboration with the Town Hall and the programme is drawn from the IFI Irish Film Archive.

IRISH BALLERINA Monica Loughman is creating a junior branch of the Irish Youth Russian Ballet Company.
Auditions for the company will be held on Sunday June 12 in The Ardilaun. Auditions are open to ballet students aged between eight and 14 who live in the West of Ireland.

MICHELLE BURKE, formerly of Irish-American trad band Cherish The Ladies, is touring Ireland next month to promote her debut solo album Pulling Threads.
The Cork born, Edinburgh based singer will play The Crane Bar, Sea Road, on Thursday June 2 at 9pm. On the night she will be joined by James Ross (piano) and Anna Massie (guitar), with special guest Alan Kelly (accordion).

A HOST of local and national talent can be found on Vintage, the debut album from Kelvin Busher, which will be launched with a gig in Kelly’s on Thursday June 2 at 9pm.
Kelvin Busher was born and raised in Wexford and grew up listening to Slim Whitman, Elvis, and later on discovering Van Morrison, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, and Johnny Cash, all of which has gone into shaping his own music.
