Athenry writer’s debut poetry collection praised by Ken Bruen

ATHENRY WRITER Anji O’Donnell has just published her debut collection of poetry, High & Dry, and it has received high praise from leading crime writer Ken Bruen.

Anji wrote the poems in response to times of hardship and emotional trauma which she went through a number of years ago. Ken Bruen has described High & Dry as “a cri de coeur wrenched from the darkest places the human mind can deliver...Anji, in her unflinching look at her own life has indeed found her voice. And what a voice it is...Anji has taken her pain, performed an act of sheer transcendence and made it sing”.

Leading Irish classical guitarist to play St Nicholas’

REDMOND O’TOOLE, possibly the leading young Irish classical guitarist of today, is returning to Galway to play St Nicholas’ Collegiate Church on Tuesday at 8pm.

Redmond plays an 8-string guitar which he plays upright like a cello, instead of the more traditional method of across the lap. On the night he will be joined by violinist Elizabeth Cooney for a programme that will include pieces by John Dowland, Paganini, Nathan Milstein, FM Torroba, Ian Wilson, Enrique Granados, Manuel De Falla, and a number of Spanish folk songs.

THREE LEADING Galway drum teachers will host a percussion extravaganza in the Nuns Island Theatre on Saturday August 8 at 3pm.

Drummers Dave Deane, Miki Belton, and Barry Duffy will take all those interested in learning drumming - whether young or old, beginner or advanced - on a journey through rock, r’n’b, Latin, and jazz rhythms.
