ABOUT FIVE years ago I received an e-mail from a Dutch customer who wanted to know if we could supply 42 copies of a single Mills and Boon title. Having sourced and supplied the 42 copies, I asked him out of sheer curiosity why he wanted them.
He told me he was a teacher of English. In Holland secondary school pupils in certain schools have the option of being taught through German, French, or English as well as Dutch. He was teaching the English stream. As an exercise in the experience of reading, the pupils were to read a Mills and Boon title and then compare it with a recognised work of literature.

GRÁINNE MHAOL, the 16th century Irish pirate queen and clan leader, will be the subject of a new play by ALâ Community Theatre.
Gráinne Mhaol and the Pages of History will premier in St Nicholas’ Collegiate Church on Wednesday November 28 at 8pm. The show will focus on her challenging and manipulating the turbulent politics of the 16th century and breaching boundaries of gender imbalance and bias.

THE SUMBRELLAS, a Galway based band led by an American and an Italian, will launch their debut album with a gig in the Townhouse Bar tomorrow night.
American singer-songwriter Chris White and Italian fiddle player Fede Betti met in Galway about three years ago and formed The Sumbrellas with Emmet O’Malley. Emmet left to pursue other interests and in 2011 Chris and Fede added Irish musicians Finbar and Flossie, and together the quartet play an energetic and infectious mix of acoustic rock, old time country, and Kentucky stomp, driven by sweet harmonious interplay and musical sparring.
