As part of the event’s ongoing partnership with Stirling in Scotland, from June 11 to 17, the organisers are looking forward to welcoming back the Scots to the streets of Galway. Last year saw record crowds with over 15,000 in attendance, half of whom were from overseas.

The Low Anthem at the Roisin Dubh

FANS OF AMERICANA are in for a treat at the Roisin Dubh with Rhode Island band The Low Athem playing at the intimate venue on Saturday week, June 16. Formed in 1006 by Brown University students and part-time DJs Ben Knox Miller and Jeff Prystowsky, the band made their mark with their 2007 debut album What the Crow Brings. Drawing on their background in classical music, they widened their instruments and sound to include everything from WWI- era pump organs to crotales (a form of antique cymbal). With the addition of new member Jocie Adamas in 2007, the band began 2008 in remote Block Island off the coast of New England.

The Young Folk at the Roisin Dubh

The Young Folk are among Ireland’s rising folk musicians. Formed just this year by Anthony Furey, the band, consisting of Furey, Paul Butler, Karl Hand, Tony McLoughlin, and Karen Hickey, have already played on the festival circuit and appeared on Today with Pat Kenny.

Their live show is already highly regarded for their technical skills and raw energy. Honed during the year with appearances at Castlepalooza, Vantastival, Knockanstockan and the Florø festival in Norway, The Young Folk bring their music to the Roisin Dubh next Monday, June 11, as part of the Galway Sessions.

With influences as diverse as Planxty and Led Zeppelin, the band have made a huge mark on the national and international scene. They have taken their live act to festivals such as Electric Picnic, Body and Soul, the White Horse Sessions, and the Galway Americana Festival.

CAVAN BASED outfit C O’Neill & Co will be playing Monroes tonight in a free gig. Since releasing their debut album Introducing last January, they have played in venues across Ireland supporting bands like The Sawdoctors, Whipping Boy, Big Country and The Minutes. Their album has been described as “a wonderfully ragged and whiskey-soaked release that’s full of dark observations and bruised and battered ballads” by Hot Press. Belfast-born artist Eamon O’Kane will exhibit his work at 126 Gallery on Queen St, beginning June 13.

The exhibition, titled Carbon, will focus on the scientific element carbon. This element is the 15th most abundant in the earth’s crust, and the fourth most abundant in the universe. It is present in all known life forms, and its reactions with other organic compounds make it the chemical basis of all known life.

NEARLY 80 GMIT art students will showcase their work at the annual GMIT Graduate Art Show beginning this Saturday, June 9, in Cluain Mhuire campus.

The exhibition, which runs until June 16, will show the exciting work of GMIT graduates, including textiles, painting, photography, painting, print, sculpture, ceramics, video/sound work, photography, drawing, performance, and installation.
