The Galway Music Residency is beginning its annual search for an apprentice ensemble for the residency programme.
Last year’s search resulted in three apprentice ensembles being selected - the Cantabile Piano Trio from Gort, SoundPost String Quartet from Galway, and the Golden String Cello Duo from Limerick.

The world of ballet will never seem the same again as Black Swan, a film which is both beautiful and disturbing, gives us Natalie Portman’s best performance yet as the perfection-seeking ballerina whose dream disintegrates along with her fragile mind.
This film, or should I say stroke of genius, from director Darren Aronofsky is certainly not for the faint-hearted. The shaky documentary style filming adds to the overall purpose of this psychological thriller which delves into the mind of New York ballet dancer Nina Sayers (Portman) who, although she has perfected her art, inflicting excruciating injuries on her body, is held back by her inability to let go, to be passionate enough to take on the performance of a lifetime.

BIG MONSTER Love, the stage name of Dublin singer-songwriter Cormac Canney, will release his new album Game Over in the Róisín Dubh this weekend.
The launch will take place in the upstairs bar of the Róisín this Saturday at 8.30pm. Cormac employs acoustic guitar, drum beats, and keyboards to create melodic indie pop that “waxes metaphysical about what’s what and what is not”.

ÁRAS NA Mac Léinn in NUI, Galway is to be transformed into an art gallery during the Múscailt arts festival, which runs from Monday February 7 to Saturday 12.
In the foyer, Artsoc will show Black Hole Paradise, an amalgamation of ideas from several of the society’s members, in a variety of media, from charcoal drawings to painting and sculpture. This year will also see the launch of the sixth comic and art magazine, Lunatic Fringe, produced entirely by members of both Artsoc and Comicsoc.
