RED BIRD, an up and coming youth-led arts organisation, will hold SAMPLE, an exhibition of its works, which opens in the Galway Arts Centre tomorrow at 6pm.
Red Bird members are aged between 15 and 22 and their interests range from fashion to creative writing, from journalism to acting, and from film to visual art. The group has been working with Galway artist Louise Manifold since September 2011, who has assisted and guided the group in its creative work.

Gerry will give the lecture, entitled Themes of Love and Laughter - the Legacy and Literary Treasures of celebrated Irish Writers Past and Present in The Ardilaun Hotel on Friday May 11. The talk will cover Percy French, James Joyce, WB Yeats, Oscar Wilde, Patrick Kavanagh, Seamus Heaney, and Johnny Duhan.

WALTER MACKEN, probably the author most associated with Galway city, would have been 97 today. What is not generally realised is that he had strong east Galway connections, his mother hailing from Cappatagle near Ballinasloe.
Most of Macken’s claim to be Ireland’s finest popular novelist of the 20th century stems from his books Rain On The Wind and Seek The Fair Land.

I FIRST became aware of Rejini Samuel’s work a couple of years ago when she began attending creative writing classes at GTI and, as a result, came along and read some poems and extracts from stories at an Over The Edge open-mic.
Even in those early efforts, it was obvious that she understood that good writing is not defined so much by the story that is being told as it is by the linguistic nuts and bolts of how it is told: the new metaphors and similes that surprise us along the way and make any story or poem its own new thing, rather than a derivative rehash of something that went before.
