IBEC, the group that represents Irish business, has released the results of a survey on the economic cost of the recent adverse weather conditions. On the basis of the results, IBEC estimates that the total value of economic output lost last week was approximately €700 million: €500 million in the services sector and €200 million in the manufacturing sector.
Eighty four per cent of survey respondents said that the response of national government was inadequate, while 69 per cent of respondents said the response of local government was inadequate.

Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology is the top performer in the Institute of Technology sector when it comes to providing equal access to education over the past two academic years, new data from the Higher Education Authority shows.
Equal access data relating to two academic years, 2007/8 and 2008/9, focuses on the social, economic and cultural background of students. It found that GMIT had the largest number of registered first year mature students two years in a row, with 338 mature students registered in the 2008/9 academic year and 311 the previous year, a total of 649 in two years.

Galway-based medical devices group Creganna has acquired US-headquartered Tactx Medical in a deal that it says will increase its revenues by 50 per cent.
The transaction will add 270 employees to the workforce of Creganna, which designs and manufactures specialist equipment for medical devices designed for minimally invasive surgical procedures and make it the largest indigenous player in the medical device sector.
