SCCUL Mentors, a structured mentoring programme established by SCCUL Enterprises celebrates its first year in operation. In 12 short months, over 180 local businesses have received free mentoring support from up to 80 established business figures and industry experts in Galway. Mentoring has been provided across a number of sectors including Finance, Sales, HR, PR & Marketing, Quality, and Business Planning. According to Bank of Ireland at the start of National Enterprise Week, new and approved lending to small and medium enterprises (SMEs) has risen by over one quarter in the first three months of 2013, based on year-on-year figures.

The recent horsemeat issue highlights how easily business reputations and consumer confidence can be damaged or lost, and further reinforces the high value for companies of having standards in place for products and services.
Almost four out of five (78 per cent) Connacht companies surveyed recently believe that implementing standards directly benefits their business. Additionally, almost 3 out of 4 (72 per cent) Managing Directors and CEOs in Connacht believe companies that use standards have stronger reputations. The research was conducted for NSAI (National Standards Authority of Ireland) by Behaviour and Attitudes.
