Galway WFC stung by former player

Former Galway Women’s FC star Savannah McCarthy returned to Eamonn Deacy Park on Sunday afternoon to open the scoring on her debut for visitors Cork City.

It was a lead from which Galway could never recover with City eventually running out 2-0 winners.

The game opened brightly for Galway with some crisp passing and controlled possession for long periods, but they were never able to make this count in the final third as they lacked the necessary penetration up front.

Cork, however, came more into the game in the second half. Saoirse Noonan went close first, unlucky to see her effort hit the side netting before McCarthy stepped up with a long-range looping strike which left Tina Hughes stranded in the Galway goal.

Just after the hour mark Cork doubled their lead when Noonan converted a spot kick after the impressive Hannah O’Donoghue was upended in the box.

Galway tried to fight their way back in the game, but despite some effots from distance, they never really threatened Eve Badana in the City goal.

Billy Clery’s side travel to Dublin on Sunday to take on UCD Waves .
