GMIT to hold annual tourism careers fair next week

More than 60 hotel and tourism employers from around Ireland, the US, and Europe will take part in GMIT’s Galway International Hotel School annual careers fair, which takes place in the Dublin Road campus on Wednesday March 7.

The fair is an opportunity for students and graduates to meet employers who are seeking staff to fill various positions. Employers will also be offering work placements to undergraduate students and exciting graduate programme opportunities for final year students.

In addition to the recruitment section, the fair will run industry seminars presented by Ireland’s largest hotel company, Dalata Hotel. Both Jurys Inns and Dalata will be discussing graduate programme opportunities for candidates looking to join a vibrant and busy industry with global careers opportunities.

Cáit Noone, head of the Galway International Hotel School and vice president for international engagement, GMIT, outlined the importance of the tourism careers fair for students. “All CAO-listed programmes in the school have work placement as a key component of the award,” she said. “As a result, programme teams continuously engage with industry partners and this ensures our curriculum is relevant and current.

“The event provides a unique opportunity for students to meet employers in an environment familiar to them, thus putting them at ease and ready to engage. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the many tourism employers who travel a distance to take part in this event and for their continued support of all our work.

“Another company returning to the annual event is the renowned Hotel Hershey which forms parts of the Hershey Corporation in Pennsylvania, USA,” Ms Noone added. “The partnership between GMIT and this American property has been established for some time and offers hotel, culinary, and retail students incredible opportunities each year when interning for a six-month period.

“Returning to GMIT and Galway are many of the UK’s leading hotels including Claridge’s Hotel, The Dorchester Collection, De Vere Hotels, Gleneagles, and Fairmont St Andrews. The school is also delighted to welcome back Hastings Hotels from Northern Ireland, and Belfast’s latest iconic property, The Titanic Hotels. In addition, many of Ireland’s leading hotels, restaurant, caterers, retailers, and tourism professionals will be in attendance.”

The event is open to all students, graduates, and the general public. The fair will take place in the new foyer of the Dublin Road campus, Galway, from 1.30pm to 4.30pm. Attendees are advised to bring copies of their current CV.
