Pub Pint Race Review in aid of Western Alzheimers - Sunday 29th October, Galway Races

Race 1 : Pub Pint Race in aid of Western Alzheimers.

The Galway Going was Soft to Heavy. The bar tenders were introduced as they entered the parade ring. Tigh Neachtain’s Tommie Raftery decided to use the area for a warm up bit swiftly lost control as his pint left the tray. The nerves got the better of Brian Feeney from Barr an Chaladh as he managed to crack his glass losing his pint through the leak! Both were topped up and the 9 contenders made their way to the start line of the 150 yards race.

After the wave of the starting flag they were off, and Sean Clancy began the commentary. There was an immediate exit as Eliza Kelly representing The Skeff took an awkward stride and ended up wearing the pint. Mike Cloonan (Carroll’s on Dominick Street ) took an early lead on the outside with Brian (Barr an Chaladh ) and Paddy Quigley (D’arcys Bar ) hot on his heels. Brian (much to his own disgust ) was the next casualty with dramatic slam of his tray as Tommie (Tigh Neactain ) picked up speed getting into second place but couldn’t sustain control and was next out. The race ended with Paddy (Darcy’s Bar ) maintaining his substantial lead, Alvin Mc Callig (Mc Hugh’s Castlegar ) sprinting into second place, Mike (Carroll’s ) third, Donal Walsh for Wards Hotel fourth, Joanna (Busker Brownes ) fifth, Nick Shaughnessy (Taaffes ) sixth.

The winner of the race was the fastest with the most pint left in the glass which was awarded to Mike from Carroll’s.

HOWEVER … In a dramatic twist of events, shenanigans were declared and identified after gaining access to vital video footage with number of contenders pouring the tray drippings back into their glasses! As a result, Athlone native and NUIG student Paddy Quigley from Darcy's Bar is the true Pint Race Champion of 2017. We will need hawk eye next Summer! Head to the Publican Pint Race Facebook page to watch the video of the race which was even broadcast on At the Races!
