Public workshop on the future of our waterways

A workshop to improve the state of Galway’s canals and waterways is to be held on 19 May at the Galway Rowing Club, Woodquay.

It is hoped that the meeting will help draw up a plan for the future of Galway’s waterways. The Galway Waterways Association has organised this event to draw attention to this truly unique feature of our city.

Our network of five kilometres of rivers and canals could become a major amenity for the residents of Galway, its visitors, and the natural environment if managed and developed with commitment and imagination. The power of the rivers and canals could also become a sustainable source of clean, renewable energy for the city.

The European Capital of Culture project offers a once in a lifetime opportunity to plan and carry out the clean-up and development of our rivers and canals over a realistic timeframe. “We could have an amazing story to tell in 2020 about how a community came together to celebrate, refurbish, and enhance its waterway system,” said a spokesperson.

Be part of it by joining the workshop at 5:30 p.m. on Friday 19 May in the Galway Rowing Club. Log onto www.galwaywaterways.eventbite.ie to book your place or phone 091 566759 to make a reservation.

Kinvara plant will end discharge into sea

Minister of State and Galway East TD, Sean Canney has said the completion of a new €5.1m Kinvara wastewater treatment plant will put an end to the undesirable discharge of untreated wastewater going directly into the sea.

The completion of the project, officially being opened on Friday, May 12th next, is part of a €5.1m investment by Irish Water in wastewater infrastructure in Kinvara Pier.

“Kinvara, which is strategically located on the south shoreline of Galway Bay is a unique sea port village with significant tourist related activity and it is vital that its interests are protected for future generations,” said Minister Canney.

“Kinvara is a very popular summer destination for day-trippers and holidaymakers who enjoy the active harbour, a number of restaurants, bars, B&Bs and hotel.

“With a growing local population, a new wastewater treatment plant is essential for Kinvara and its surrounding areas to allow for seasonal/future population growth and further substantial tourism and commercial development,” said Minister Canney.
