Learn how to parent creatively

An innovative parenting course which will be held in the city this month will examine issues such as limits and boundaries, childhood anxiety, tantrums and sibling rivalry.

The seven week course, which begins at Westside Resource Centre on Tuesday next from 6.45pm to 9pm, is entitled Family - the Creative Container. It is being presented by Pernet, a lay organisation underpinned by the values of the Little Sisters of the Assumption.

The course is designed by Ann Marie Collins, an art psychotherapist and teacher who has worked with families for more than 30 years. It will be delivered by her and two co-facilitators.

It takes the form of seven workshops which bring together research and understanding from developmental psychology and parenting practices.

Participants will work with art materials which is described by the organisers as a fun way to think as it helps to process and digest learning. People are advised not to wear their best clothes and be prepared to get their hands dirty.

Other topics to be covered include identifying children’s needs, self-esteem, hyperactivity, building a relationship with your child and food, bedtime and homework.
