Take part in a re-enactment of historic Oireachtas 1913 photograph

A total of 163 people are needed to take part in the re-enactment of the famous photograph taken on the steps of the Town Hall during the Gaelic League Oireachtas of 1913.

The Town Hall Theatre is putting out a call for people from all ages, backgrounds, ethnicities, and creeds, living in Galway to participate in the re-enactment at the theatre on Saturday June 18. Those interested should contact Siobhan at the Galway Arts Centre via [email protected].

The organisers are hoping the 2016 image will become iconic and be referenced in the next century. A call has also gone to descendants of the original figures to come to Galway and stand in the exact place their ancestors stood in the 1913 photograph, which is now on permanent display at the theatre.

The 1913 photograph features some of the men and women who went on to participate in the Rising and become the leaders of the new Irish state. Included are three future presidents - Douglas Hyde, Sean T Ó Ceallaigh, and Eamon De Valera. Also present were 1916 proclamation signatories Pádraig Pearse, Seán Mac Diarmada, and Éamonn Ceannt; along with other noted figures such as Cathal Brugha and Countess Markiewicz.
