City businesses embrace #GRMAGaillimh initiative

Cllr John Walsh, deputising on behalf of the Mayor of the City of Galway last week launched the pilot scheme #GRMAGaillimh in the Treasure Chest Galway as part of Seachtain na Gaeilge celebrations.

Two well-known businesses in Galway; The Treasure Chest and Hollands, approached Gaillimh le Gaeilge with an idea to encourage staff to use simple Irish phrases in their dealings with customers.

The #GRMAGaillimh scheme was developed by Gaillimh le Gaeilge with support from the Galway Chamber, Galway City Business Association and the Latin Quarter. It is designed to encourage those with very little Irish in the business community to use the language in their day to day business.

The easy to use phrases are provided with an English translation and with the phonetic spelling, ideal for both the non-Irish speaker and Irish speaker to participate in. There is also a short video demonstrating the phrases in use! The scheme aims to increase the use of the spoken language in Ireland’s first bilingual city so that visitors and Galwegians alike will hear and feel Galway’s unique bilingual character.

Gaillimh le Gaeilge will be distributing the #GRMAGaillimh booklets in the coming weeks and you can also check out the video. Tuilleadh Eolais: Gaillimh le Gaeilge, Teach Uí Chiaruáin, Sráid Thobar an Iarla, Gaillimh.
