Lecture on the people who ran 17th century Galway

The men who controlled Galway city and its corporation in the 17th century, had wealth and power, but they had to tread carefully with English dominance and sectarianism breathing down their necks.

These men will be the subject of a public lecture from The Galway Archaeological and Historical Society, which takes place on Monday November 9 at 8pm in The Harbour Hotel, Dock Road. The talk, entitled Managing the Windsors of Ireland: Galway’s town council 1603-1653, will be given by Dr Bríd McGrath, originally from Roundstone, who is a research associate in the School of Social Work and Social Policy in Trinity College Dublin.

This talk looks at who were the members of the town council, how many of them came from which of Galway’s famous Tribes, how they dealt with the pressure to appoint Protestant mayors and bailiffs, and their role within and outside the city.  The talk is based on Galway’s famous old corporation records, Liber A, and some recently discovered letters from the famous Galway lawyer Patrick Darcy now held in the Huntington Library, California.

Admission is free and all are welcome. See www.gahs.info
