Gemma Bovery to open new GFS season

Gemma Arterton stars in modern re-imagining of Flaubert novel

GEMMA BOVERY, the French film starring English actress Gemma Arterton, opens the Galway Film Society's Winter Season 2015, when it is screened in the Town Hall Theatre on Sunday September 20 at 8pm.

In this charming retelling of the classic novel Madame Bovery, an English couple named Gemma and Charles Bovery move into a small Normandy town, and Martin Joubert, the local baker, who is obsessed with Flaubert, cannot believe it. Here are real life people who seem to be replicating the behaviour of his favourite fictional characters right before his eyes.

Gemma Arterton stars as the playfully updated version of France’s most famous fictional heroine, with Fabrice Luchini as the smitten baker and film’s narrator. Balancing sensuality and comedy, it is skilfully directed by Anne Fontaine, who also made Coco Before Chanel.
