TD demands funding for Eamonn Deacy Park after Galway FC promotion

Galway FC’s promotion to the League of Ireland Premier Division should be marked by injection of funding for improvements to the club grounds of Eamonn Deacy Park.

This is the view of Fine Gael Galway West TD Brian Walsh, who said funding for improvement works on the stadium was essential ahead of next season when the club would host games against Irish football’s leading teams.

Galway FC was promoted to the Premier Division following its 3-0 victory against UCD in the second leg of the Promotion/Relegation Playoff last Friday.

“The whole county is very proud of the team’s achievements this season, and the return of top-flight soccer to Eamonn Deacy Park next year will be a fantastic boost for Galway,” said Dep Walsh. “It has been a particularly great achievement given the challenges the club has faced in recent years.”

Dep Walsh said it would be “wholly appropriate” if that achievement “could be acknowledged” with the provision of Government funding to improve club grounds. He has been in contact with the Minister of State for Sport, Michael Ring, on this issue and discussions “are at an advanced stage”.

Galway and District Football League, the owner of Eamonn Deacy Park, applied for funding under the Sports Capital Programme earlier this year but was unsuccessful as the application was deemed to have been invalid.
