Monivea boxers claim Connacht titles

Young boxers from Monivea Boxing Club claimed three titles at the recent Connacht Championships in Castlerea BC.

Liam Jordan, Declan Cullan and Orla McInerney are the new title holders after a successful event for the club.

Newcomer 75kg Liam Jordan boxed Oisin Magee (OlympicBC ), getting through with straight accurate punches and winning all three rounds to win his first Connacht title.

Declan Cullan (91kg ) boxed Justin Newell (Claremorris ) catching his opponent with a solid right, forcing a count in the first round. Cullan kept working his straight punches for the rest of the contest, winning by 3/0 decision to pick up his first Connacht title.

Orla McInerney (57kg ) faced Castlebar’s Michelle Chambers, the 2012 National Intermediate champion. However Orla, with a great display of defences and straight punches, paced herself for the four rounds, proving to be too strong for Chambers, winning all four rounds and her second Connacht title.

Other Monivea boxers in action were newcomer 75kg Marie Clarke, 71kg Patrick Fallon who lost out to a stronger Noel McBride (Corrrib BC ), and 75kg Thomas Flaherty, back after a lay off of 10 years, who was beaten by Jake McNally (Loughrea BC ).
