Monroe’s gig to help Tirellan girl battling cancer

A fundraiser being held at Monroe’s Live at the end of the month will raise vital funds for a city child who is battling an aggressive childhood cancer.

The night of “ceol agus damhsa” which takes place on Thursday January 30 will help finance the care and treatment of eight-year-old Grace Kenneally from Tirellan Heights who has neuroblastoma.

The event is being organised by Cairde Grace and will see some of the best of Irish dancing and traditional music on the Monroe’s Live stage with dancing from the renowned Hession School and world-famous sean-nós dancers the Devane Brothers.

Providing music for the evening will be the acclaimed accordion player Cormac Begley who will perform songs from his latest recording, Tunes in the Churches, described by Tradconnect.com as “representative of where the true authentic voice of Irish traditional music is at in the 21st Century”.

Later former Eurovision star and Galway Bay FM personality, Marc Roberts will perform a set which includes tracks from his iTunes chart-topping album Now and Then.

Rounding off this evening of Irish song and dance will be the stars of Trad on the Prom, Máirín and Yvonne Fahy and Chris Kelly.

Grace was diagnosed with Sstage III neuroblastoma, the little known childhood cancer, more than three years ago. Following extensive treatment she relapsed and is currently on treatment again.

Her mother Ethna Kenneally states she had “suspicions” that her little girl had neuroblastoma yet it came as a terrible shock to her when the oncologist at Crumlin Hospital in Dublin gave her the results of their tests.

She says in her “wildest nightmares” she never thought this would happen to her family.

Tickets for the fundraiser at Monroe’s are priced at €15 and are available from www.monroes.ie Doors open at 8pm with the first act taking to the stage at 8.30pm. For more information on Grace’s battle with neuroblastoma, search for Cairde Grace on Facebook.
