Hear the songs of Schubert

THE SONGS of Franz Schubert, one of the leading composers of the Romantic era, will bring the curtain down on Music for Galway’s 32nd International Concert Season.

The ‘Softly Shall You Sleep...’ concert takes place in the ballroom of the Hotel Meyrick on Tuesday at 8pm, with bass-baritone Conor Biggs, pianist Michel Stas, and the ConTempo Quartet.

Conor will sing a selection of Schubert’s lieder, including Goethe’s ‘Gesänge des Härfners’ and three poems by Friedrich von Schiller. ConTempo will perform Schubert: String Quartet No 14, D 810, better known as ‘Death and the Maiden’.

Dubliner Conor Biggs is regularly in demand as a soloist in oratorio, recital, and opera. He has sung in Ireland, Britain, France, Germany, Holland, and Belgium.

Belgian pianist Michel Stas graduated from the Royal Flemish Conservatoire in Antwerp, is director of the Academy of Music, Drama and Dance in Overijse, Belgium.
