New director appointed to St Patrick’s Day Parade

Caroline McDonagh has been appointed the new director for the St Patrick’s Day parade in Galway city, taking over the role from Craig Flaherty who was the director for the past three years.

“I am honoured and delighted to have been appointed to this role,” said Ms McDonagh, a native of Galway who has a long history of involvement in the arts and has worked with many local and community initiatives. “Galway City Council and I look forward to working with local businesses, arts groups, and the local community.”

Ms McDonagh said the focus of the St Patrick’s Weekend, will be on the Parade which will take place on Friday March 17.

“The St Patrick's Day Parade is a platform to showcase local artists and community groups and a wonderful opportunity to see groups and bands that come from all over the world to parade through the medieval streets of Galway,” she said. “It is a great day out for all the family.”

This year’s parade will be the 109th in the city and will feature marching bands, local community groups, dancing groups, pipe bands, and local business floats, as well as participants from abroad.

The St Patrick’s Day Parade organisers are welcoming applications for all groups involved in community initiatives and groups including theatre, bands, performance, dance, music, sport, youth, carnival, vintage cars, etc.
