Teenager sent for trial over assault of city publican

A Ballybane teenager accused of assaulting a city centre publican while armed with a knife has been sent forward for trial.

Nineteen-year-old John Mongan, with an address at 5 Castlepark, Ballybane, is charged with assaulting Kieran Hanley causing him harm, contrary to Section 3 of the Non Fatal Offences Against the Person Act, and while committing this offence and in the course of the dispute producing a black and yellow handled knife in a manner likely to intimidate another person and capable of inflicting serious harm, contrary to Section 9(1 ) of the Firearms and Offensive Weapons Act 1990, at Murty Rabbitt’s Bar on March 18, 2011.

At Galway District Court on Monday Garda Aidan Quinn gave evidence of serving the book of evidence on the accused on the morning of the court sitting. Inspector Brendan Carroll told the court that the Director of Public Prosecutions has consented to the accused being sent forward for trial to the next sittings of the Galway Circuit Criminal Court commencing February 21, 2012.

Judge Mary Fahy then remanded Mongan on continuing bail with conditions. Free legal aid plus one junior counsel was also granted.
