Eyre Square left ‘as naked as Jesus’ over Christmas, claims Conneely

Eyre Square was left “as naked as Jesus when he was born” over the Christmas, making the area “dull” and lacking in “Christmas atmosphere”.

This is the view of Fine Gael councillor Pádraig Conneely who has criticised City Hall, accusing them of leaving Eyre Square “without any Christmas colour” once the Continental Christmas Market finished on December 18.

The square featured a Christmas tree with lights, while trees around the edge of the square also featured lights, and there was a crib outside the Browne Doorway. However the outspoken councillor believers this was not enough after the Christmas Market.

“Eyre Square is the centrepoint of the city for Galwegians, returning immigrants, and visitors,” he said. “The square was left as naked as Jesus when he was born in the crib in Bethlehem. There should have been more done. It looked bad, especially as there were many visitors over the Christmas, with the Leinster match, and the square looked dull with no Christmas atmosphere.”

However the council’s director of services Ciarán Hayes said that Cllr Conneely “never raised the issue with us at the time
