Theatre classes at Galway Actors Workshop

Galway Actors Workshop is offering a new daytime course in creating theatre as part of its autumn course programme. It is also offering the popular introduction to acting for adults who have always wanted to give it a try, and a scene study class for those with more experience.

The introduction to acting class on Monday nights runs from 6.30pm to 8.30pm and starts on September 5, covering all the basics in approaching acting and theatre through a varied selection of games, exercises, improvisations and techniques.

The creating theatre class on Tuesday mornings runs from 11am to 1pm. Starting on September 6, it is designed for those who do not work the usual 9 to 5 hours who are interested in exploring different ways of making theatre. The course will suit beginners and those with some experience alike as it plays with the many ways of coming up with ideas, developing them and presenting them in a theatrical way. It will cover a range of techniques including different forms of improvisation, devising, writing, character work, and traditional scene study. The work culminates in a small performance at end of term.

The scene study course runs on Thursday nights from 6.30pm to 8.30pm and starts on September 8. It is for students with some experience of acting who want to develop their skills in interpreting and performing scripts. It shall look at voice, dialogue, characterisation, objectives and play with some rehearsal techniques for unlocking the life of the text. Again, the work culminates in a small performance at end of term.

While the courses have specific learning objectives, each course starts with a discussion of what every student is hoping to get out of the term and then tailors the classes accordingly so all students feel they can be challenged and expand their abilities.

All courses run for 12 weeks, are for adults, and take place at the Anno Santo Hotel. Cost is €200 or €170 for students and the unwaged. Call 087-2373531 or email [email protected] to book a place. More details can be found on www.galwayactorsworkshop.com
