Coláiste Iognáid scoops council litter award

Coláiste Iognáid has been named overall winner in the Galway City Council's Adopt-a-Spot Competition 2010.

For the competition, schools across the city were invited to adopt an area close to their school and maintain it litter free. Over the last year, Coláiste Iognáid adopted the walkway along the canal, with groups of students giving up their Saturday mornings for litter clean-ups of the area.

Presenting the award and a €500 cheque to Cólaiste Iognáid last week, Dr Sharon Carroll, the council’s environment education officer, commended the school’s anti-litter efforts:

“The teachers and students really embraced the ‘Adopt-a-Spot’ initiative and dedicated a lot of time and effort to the project,” she said. “Groups of students carried out litter clean-ups, often in cold, wet, and windy weather.”

The Adopt-a-Spot competition for 2011 will be extended to include entries from community groups and residents’ associations.
