Discover the beaches of County Galway

To celebrate the wonderful beaches available to us in County Galway, a series of walks is taking place throughout the month of August, organised with the aim of exploring and discovering these magnificent beaches.

The walks which are led by experienced and local marine biologists as well ecologists, will look at various aspects of marine ecology, taking in all different areas of marine life, exploring everything from seaweeds and shellfish to rock pools teaming with life. All the walks are interactive and an excellent way to learn about the various habitats which can be found on our beaches from sand dunes to the shoreline.

Some walks have already taken place but it is certainly not too late to get involved and avail of this wonderful opportunity to get out there and explore. The next walk will take place at Drumnach, Inisbofin, on Thursday, August 12, from 12.30pm to 1.30pm and is led by Dr Dave McGrath. This is followed by a walk led by Noirin Burke at Dog’s Bay, Roundstone, on August 14 from 1.30pm to 2.30pm. JP Tiernan will be leading an hour-long walk at Tra An Doilin, An Ceathru Rua, the following day starting at 2.30pm.

On August 27 at 12.30pm Dr Dave McGrath will again lead an hour-long walk at West End, Inishbofin. This will be followed by a walk led by Emma McLoughney at Long Point, Loughrea, on August 28 at 2pm, and then a walk led by Brid Ui Chualain at Tra Inish Oirr, Inis Oirr, on August 29, at 1pm.

All walks are free and suitable for families, however particpants are advised to wear suitable footwear and to dress for the weather. All children must be accompanied by a parent/guardian. This programme has being developed and funded by the Environment Sector, Galway County Council.
