Choosing a university course is an exciting step, but it can also be a little daunting when there are so many options to explore. At University of Galway, students have the opportunity to discover their interests, develop new skills and become part of a welcoming and vibrant campus community.
Ahead of Pathways, the undergraduate recruitment event organised by the Galway Advertiser at the Galmont Hotel on November 10, we hear from two current University of Galway students, Daniele Feldmane and Aoibhe Donnellan.
They share what inspired them to choose their courses, what they enjoy most about university life and how their experiences have helped them grow both academically and personally. Their stories offer a glimpse into the many opportunities available to students as they begin planning their own third-level journeys.
The University of Galway team looks forward to meeting prospective students at Pathways and helping them explore the possibilities for their future.
Daniele Feldmane - 3rd year BSc Science (GY301 ), Physics and Applied Physics pathway
Why you chose that course?
I wasn’t entirely sure which science discipline I wanted to specialise in and I liked the freedom of choice this course offers. There are so many combinations of pathways we can take and elective modules to choose from. I chose to do Physics and Mathematics in my second year before committing to Physics this year.
What’s the best thing about studying at University of Galway?
Definitely the sense of community at University of Galway. Every student I know is an active member of a society, sports club, volunteer organisation or the students’ union. And if they aren’t yet, they surely will be dragged into it by their friends soon enough.
As someone who moved to Ireland to study, I have felt included since my first day of college and I’ve been doing my best to give back wherever I can. In second year, I helped incoming first years settle into college as a student leader in the University’s peer-learning programme CÉIM, and this year I get to help organise events as auditor of the Physics society.
Aoibhe Donnellan - 2nd Year Speech and Language Therapy (GY503 )
Why you chose that course?
My name is Aoibhe Donnellan, and I am currently in my second year of studying Speech and Language Therapy at the University of Galway. I chose this course because I have always been interested in working in the healthcare sector and wanted to pursue a career where I could make a positive difference in people’s lives.
I find it really rewarding to learn about how communication, speech and language can impact people in their everyday lives, and I am looking forward to developing the skills and knowledge needed to support people of all ages with their communication needs.
What’s the best thing about studying at University of Galway?
My favourite part of studying at the University of Galway is the friendly and welcoming atmosphere on campus. There is a great sense of community among students, and I really enjoy meeting new people and getting involved in university life.
The University also offers so many fantastic opportunities, both academically and socially, which make the overall student experience so enjoyable. I am delighted to be studying at the University of Galway and look forward to continuing my journey over the next few years.
