National Symphony Orchestra Ireland, in partnership with Music for Galway, returns to Leisureland on Thursday, November 11, under the baton of acclaimed conductor Anna Rakitina, with Daniel Müller-Schott, one of the world’s leading cellists, as soloist.
With a programme spanning Elgar’s deeply moving Cello Concerto and Sibelius’s monumental Seventh Symphony, the vivid colours of Grieg’s First Peer Gynt Suite and the Irish premiere of American composer Jessie Montgomery’s Overture, expect vibrant contemporary energy, profound tenderness, majestic power and thrilling drama at this 'Taste of Cellisimo' event.
Daniel Müller-Schott, hailed by The New York Times for his “intense expressivity” and “bold, fiery technique”, has a long-standing and deeply personal relationship with Elgar’s cello concerto. First encountering the work through the recording of the legendary Jacqueline du Pré, it is a piece he has performed and repeatedly revisited throughout his career.
Anna Rakitina has firmly established herself on the international stage through highly acclaimed appearances with the Chicago, Boston and San Francisco Symphonies, the New York Philharmonic, Los Angeles Philharmonic and Gewandhausorchester Leipzig.
The programme also includes Sibelius’s final symphony, his seventh and a most powerful work, and American composer Jessie Montgomery’s Overture which she describes as “a one-movement orchestral tutti steeped in harmonic textures inspired by a fusion between jazz and American classical harmonies, Baroque rhythmic gestures, and polyphonic tension”. Grieg’s First Peer Gynt Suite will bring an exciting evening to a colourful and atmospheric end.
