Hyperbaric therapy after breast cancer: managing late radiation side effects

Completing breast cancer treatment is a huge milestone — a moment to celebrate moving forward. But sometimes, months or even years later, side effects from radiotherapy can appear. These may include skin changes, pain, swelling, or wounds that are slow to heal. They can be frustrating and worrying, especially when you’ve already come through so much.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time not only to raise awareness of early detection, but also to highlight support for women living with the long-term effects of treatment.

One therapy now available in Galway that may help is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT ). At OxyGeneration, clients sit in a comfortable pressurised chamber and breathe high-concentration oxygen through a mask. This increases the amount of oxygen carried in the blood, helping to reduce inflammation, stimulate healing, and encourage new blood vessel growth in tissues damaged by radiation.

For women affected by late radiation side effects, hyperbaric treatment may ease pain, improve wound healing, and support recovery. It is non-invasive, drug-free, and carried out in a calm, supportive environment. Many clients find that alongside regular medical care, it gives their body the extra boost it needs to repair and restore.

If you would like to learn more about this therapy, and whether it could be suitable for you, call OxyGeneration Galway today on 091 394 444.

As part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, lots of fundraising events are taking place in Galway and across the country. “Race in Pink” will take place at the Galway Race Course on 25 October. All proceeds from the day will go directly to the National Breast Cancer Research Institute, helping to fund world-class research projects that improve detection, treatment, and client outcomes. OxyGeneration is proud to support the NBCRI.
