Galway Film Society will launch a ten-week series of international arthouse films for its 2026 autumn/winter season at The EYE Cinema this Sunday, September 27.
In moving to The EYE Cinema, GFS intends to retain the intimate, community-focused atmosphere that has been central to the society for more than 60 years. Screenings will take place in the cinema’s smaller screens, with GFS continuing to manage its own ticket sales and welcome audiences to each screening.
There is also free underground and surface parking, and audiences will be able to enjoy a glass of wine thanks to The EYE Cinema’s new drinks licence.
The programme offers a richly varied selection of comedy, drama, romance, documentary and coming-of-age cinema from France, Britain, Ireland, Nigeria, India, Canada, Palestine and across Europe.
Highlights include François Ozon’s The Stranger (L’Étranger ), his acclaimed adaptation of Albert Camus’ classic novel; My Father’s Shadow, set in Nigeria; Cactus Pears, an intimate Indian story of grief and connection; and All That’s Left of You, Cherien Dabis’ sweeping Palestinian family epic.
GFS will also continue its support for new and emerging filmmaking talent, with short films accompanying selected features. These include BLACKROCK, a special treat for Galway’s swimming community, and the beautifully animated WILDKIND.
The season concludes with a special festive treat: the 25th-anniversary cinema re-release of Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s much-loved Amélie, screening on December 6 and 7.
Films screen every Sunday at 5pm and 8pm, with a Monday screening at 6.30pm. Individual tickets cost €10, with concessions at €8, while a 10-week season ticket costs €75.
