Three celebrated, international musicians with Irish roots will combine their talents for an afternoon of colourful, virtuosic chamber music at St Joseph’s Church on Presentation Road, next Sunday, September 20, at 3pm.
The opening concert of Music for Galway’s 2026/27 season ‘Breaking Boundaries’ will bring together the newly formed Laragh Trio to perform Watercolours from France and Beyond.
This international three-piece comprises acclaimed flautist Sinéad Farrell, cellist Katie Tertell, and pianist Fiachra Garvey. Together, they will perform an engaging programme of music from France, Germany and Bohemia, combining elegance, lyricism and virtuosity.
The showcase opens with JS Bach’s Sonata in E Major, BWV 1035, a masterpiece of the flute repertoire. This is followed by Bohuslav Martin?’s Trio for Flute, Cello and Piano, a vibrant work full of rhythmic energy and distinctive character.
The concert’s title comes from Philippe Gaubert’s Trois Aquarelles (Three Watercolours ) for Flute, Cello and Piano, an evocative work inspired by French impressionism designed to emulate the transparent, blended washes of hue and tone found in watercolours. It is designed to illustrate the delicate colours and textures possible within a three-instrument ensemble.
The programme concludes with Louise Farrenc’s Trio for flute, cello and piano, highlighting the remarkable artistry of a French composer whose music is receiving renewed international attention.
Dublin born flautist, Sinéad Farrell, combines a busy career as an orchestral musician, teacher, soloist and chamber musician. She is a founding member of the Ficino Ensemble who teaches flute and piccolo at the Royal Irish Academy of Music, and St Louis School of Music in Rathmines.
Former member of the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland, American cellist Katie Tertell, is an artistic curator, innovating how classical music is digested in modern times as a founder of the Appalachian Chamber Music Festival in West Virginia.
Irish pianist Fiachra Garvey is the founder and artistic director of the critically acclaimed West Wicklow Chamber Music Festival, and a winner of several piano competitions across Europe. He served on the Board of Directors of the Dublin International Piano Competition from 2016 to 2022, and was made a Freeman of the Worshipful Company of Musicians in 2021 and a Freeman of the City of London in 2022.
With three outstanding musicians at the heart of this exciting new collaboration, Watercolours from France and Beyond promises to be an afternoon of discovery, colour and musical brilliance.
