Excitement is already building for this year’s Swim in Pink, the National Breast Cancer Research Institute's annual fundraising event in association with Blackrock Beachwear. Taking place from 11am to 12 noon at Ladies Beach, Salthill, and nationally, on Sunday, October 11, the event will encourage people across Ireland to dip, swim or splash in support of breast cancer research.
Now an established highlight of the Breast Cancer Awareness Month calendar, Swim in Pink has won numerous awards and has seen more than 5,000 swimmers take part over the years, raising more than €800,000 for life-saving breast cancer research. Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in Ireland, with approximately one in seven women expected to develop the disease, and approximately 3,600 new cases diagnosed each year.
The funds raised through Swim in Pink help support the important research funded by NBCRI. Researchers based at the Lambe Institute at University of Galway are currently leading major national and international projects focused on improving the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer. And it’s not just Galway getting involved. Swim in Pink events are taking place at locations across the country, giving people the opportunity to come together in their local communities and make a difference. Registration costs just €25, with all proceeds supporting the research team funded by NBCRI. Every registered swimmer will also receive a free Swim in Pink swim cap.
