The provision of new seating along the promenade in Ballyloughane has been warmly welcomed by Cllr Terry O’Flaherty.
Most of the old seats that were in very poor condition, some of them virtually unusable, have now been replaced with new ones.
“Some of the seating was in dire need of repairs and painting and because I had funding left over after the erection of the new shelters that cater for both swimmers and walkers, I made further representations to the Parks department to purchase new seating with this money.
“Six seats in total were removed except for one that was in good condition from Ballyloughane, the new seats are all the same and look really lovely – it looks better when they are all matching.
“Two of the seats that were removed were relatively new, so one was placed on the green area just across from the Kingfisher and the other has been relocated to beside the pitch at the rear of the Kingfisher,” said Cllr O’Flaherty.
The Independent Councillor said that in the past two to three years, she had been instrumental in placing 20 new seats or benches – six on the Ballyloughane promenade, four at Nolan Park in Renmore Avenue, one next to the pitch at the rear of the Kingfisher, six on the walkway at Ballyloughane where the Dexter cows are located during the winter months and three along the Mellows walkway.
Cllr O’Flaherty said that these locations were all popular areas for people taking walks, many of whom had asked her to provide some seating for all those who would like to take a short rest when they were out walking.
“I would like to thank Liam Heneghan and the Galway City Council Parks outdoor staff for the great work they are doing in keeping Ballyloughane in such good condition – it doesn’t go unnoticed and the results of their efforts are greatly admired by many,” she added.
