O’Flaherty welcomes €120,000 allocated towards east side projects

Independent Councillor Terry O’Flaherty has welcomed the allocation of €25,000 towards floodlighting for O’Sullivan Park, Mervue, and €20,000 towards public lighting along the new walkway around Mellows pitches in Ballyloughane.

She also expressed satisfaction with her successful securing of funding, as the only member of the ruling pact on the east side of the city, in Galway City Council’s 2023 budget, for a series of other projects.

“Further to my representations to the Housing Director, a sum of €10,000 has been included towards the cleaning of the exterior walls on the Walter Macken Place apartments, Mervue. Additional funding will be required to carry out the works as the render has discoloured since the refurbishment took place almost twenty years ago.

“€25,000 will be spent on footpath improvements in Mervue, bringing the total of the 2021 and this year’s budget to €60,000. The road and footpath improvements to Barry Avenue were carried out thanks to funding I secured in last years budget, along with funding from my Local Improvement Scheme fund.

“I was very happy, too, to include €10,000 towards new fencing around the football pitch for East United, in Castle Park, Ballybane, and I also secured €10,000 towards ball nets for the Liam Mellows GAA pitch in Ballyloughane.

“A further €5,000 is allocated towards rotavating and planting of wild flowers in the field near the bridge in Ballyloughane, and €3,000 towards the planting of wild flowers in Renmore.

“€5,000 will go towards art work on the concrete blocks in Fána Glas, Ballybane, and €1,000 on wild flowers there, while €1,000 will go towards new signage for Coillte Muirlinne and Sruthán Mhuirlinne, Ballybane.

“An allocation of €5,000 has also been agreed for a recreation and amenity project for Balllybane/Doughiska.

“All of these very worthwhile projects will go a long way to enhancing these areas and I am very pleased to have been in a position to bring them to the elected members to have funding agreed for them in this year’s budget,” added Cllr O’Flaherty.
