Organisers of the ‘Streets of Galway’ are calling on city residents, families and local businesses to line the 8km route to support 4,000 runners this Saturday, August 8.
The charity event, sponsored by Medtronic, will celebrate its 40th anniversary this weekend, with its largest ever field of participants, ranging from elite athletes and club runners to first timers on a personal challenge to run a mostly flat, single loop challenge.
As the race marks four decades of running through the heart of Galway, organisers are encouraging communities across the city to play their part by coming out to support participants along the course. The support of spectators remains one of the most important elements of the event, helping runners through the toughest stages of the race and creating an unforgettable experience for participants.
“We are incredibly proud to celebrate 40 years of the Streets of Galway,” said Brian Bruton, Race Director. “This event has always been about more than running. It is about community. As we celebrate this special milestone, we would love to see the people of Galway come out in force and help make this the biggest and best race atmosphere we’ve ever had.”
The race has grown significantly since its beginnings four decades ago and this year’s event is expected to attract a record number of participants, reflecting the continued growth of running and active lifestyles across the region.
As title sponsor, Medtronic said the event reflects the values of wellbeing, community and participation that have made the race such an important part of Galway life.
“Galway has embraced the Streets of Galway for 40 years, and we are delighted to support this landmark event,” said Keith Healy, Medtronic’s senior finance director.
“Adding to the celebrations this year, we are bringing fitness expert and Laya Health Ambassador, Karl Henry to lead the official race warm-up at the Claddagh. We hope the people of Galway will come out again in force to support the runners, and help make this 40th year one to remember.”
Organisers are encouraging spectators to gather safely along the route, support participants of all abilities and help create an atmosphere that showcases Galway at its very best.
The Streets of Galway takes place at 7pm on August 8, with route and race information available on the Galway City Harriers’ website.
