Countdown begins for Streets of Galway 8km

A Galwayman is set to establish a personal record for athletics in Galway when this year’s Future Streets of Galway is held on August 8.

Patrick Larkin of Moycullen has run all 23 races since the event began, and according to race organisers, the Galway City Harriers Athletic Club, he has already entered for this year’s 24th annual event.

Larkin is set to be one of 2,000 who pound the streets of Galway in what has become the most popular event on the athletic calendar in Galway.

Once again the eight kilometre race will start and finish at Southpark in the Claddagh, attacting elite athletes, athletic club runners, recreational runners, and those who just don the runners once a year.

Over the years many illustrious names in Irish athletics have graced the Streets of Galway which this year boasts a prize fund of €5,000. In addition there is a course record bonus of €500 for both men and women. The men’s course record was set in 1998 by Clareman Seamus Power while former Olympian Rosemary Ryan of the Bilboa club set the women’s record in 2001.

Junior participants are also welcome and must be aged under 19 on the day of the race with a minimum of age 14.

This year’s race director is Gearoid Quinn, while the event is once again sponsored by Future Wealth and Protection, the financial services provider in Merchants Rd, Galway.

Michael McLaughlin, managing director, says the race is a major feature on the athletics calendar. “Future is very pleased to be once again associated with the Streets of Galway 8k Road Race, which is a major feature of the local and national running calendar. We are looking forward to another great event on August 8.”

Entries are open until July 10 (€18 ), late entries (€25 ) until July 24, but the organisers are limiting race numbers to 2,000 to ensure the safety and enjoyment of all.

The online entry system, a feature introduced last year, is again being employed as is chip timing. Race packs containing a competitors number, timing chip, and T-shirt, are being distributed from Future offices on Friday August 7 from 3 to 7pm and on Saturday August 8 from 10am to 5:30pm.
