Young musicians from Ireland will embark on a musical tour From Skylines to Shadows this August Bank Holiday.
Each summer the Irish Youth Wind Ensemble (IYWE ) brings together young wind, brass and percussion players for an intensive residential course at the University of Limerick, working alongside many of Ireland's leading instrumental tutors before embarking on a national concert tour.
Over seventy of Ireland's most passionate young wind, brass, and percussion musicians of the IYWE will perform in Galway and Dublin under the direction of Artistic Director Ronan O'Reilly.
Featuring works by Philip Sparke, Nelson Jesus, John Mackey, Franco Cesarini, Nigel Hess and Johan de Meij, the repertoire explores everything from dazzling virtuosity and cinematic grandeur to moments of profound reflection and lyrical beauty.
Several of the works are believed to receive their Irish premieres, offering audiences a rare opportunity to experience exciting new additions to the wind ensemble repertoire.
Speaking about this year's programme, Artistic Director Ronan O'Reilly says: “This year the Irish Youth Wind Ensemble takes their audiences on an extraordinary musical journey – from the energy and excitement of Philip Sparke’s A Weekend in New York to the haunting imagination of John Mackey’s Haunted Objects and the symphonic brilliance of Johan de Meij’s Extreme Beethoven.”
Presented by the Irish Association of Youth Orchestras, the concert reflects the organisation's commitment to nurturing Ireland's next generation of musicians through inspiring, collaborative and engaging musical experiences.
The Irish Youth Wind Ensemble is funded by the Arts Council.
Performances will be Saturday, August 1 at 7pm in St Nicholas' Collegiate Church, Galway and Sunday, August 2 at 7pm in The Great Hall, IMMA Venues, Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin.
