Documentary The SU will have its world premiere at the Galway Film Fleadh this Sunday, July 12, at 3pm, in the Town Hall Theatre.
The documentary, directed and produced by Gerard Conway, Mark Byrne and Rob Dennis, offers unprecedented access to the lives of Students’ Union officers as they organise protests, campaign for change, support fellow students and grow into their roles as leaders.
Filmed over two years, it captures not only the challenges they face, but also the friendships, humour and energy of student life in Galway.
For decades the Students’ Union at the University of Galway has produced some of Ireland’s leading political figures, including former President Michael D Higgins. Throughout its history, generations of student leaders have found themselves at the centre of campaigns that reach far beyond campus – from contraception to abortion, from the Troubles to war in the Middle East.
Students’ Union President Seán de Búrca said: “We’re very excited that the Film Fleadh audience will get an insight into the world of the SU. This documentary shows how our Students’ Union Officers develop the skills and values that shape them into future leaders. It’s an inspiring story about getting involved and believing you can make a difference.”
Students’ Union Vice President/Welfare and Equality Officer Molly Hickey added: “The SU offers a rare behind-the-scenes look at the realities of student representation. Whether you were involved in student politics, are currently a student, or simply care about the future of Irish society, this documentary will offer food for thought.”
