His response is An Mháthairi, starring Simone Kirby (Kneecap ) alongside newcomer Oisín Thompson (Trespasses ), which receives its world premiere at the Galway Film Fleadh next Thursday, July 9, at the Town Hall Theatre.
The thriller follows a mother who is faced with her demons when the killer of her son by a one-punch assault comes crashing back into her life. Vincent Gallagher (Second to None ) will once again direct from a script by Seán Keeley, continuing their close collaboration from their award winning Irish Language short film, Scríofa Sna Réaltaí.
“An Mháthair has been an incredibly personal project to bring to life. We hope the film draws audiences in with its tension and mounting urgency, while also opening up a conversation about unchecked violence in our society and the system that struggles to answer it. I’m very proud of what we’ve created with this phenomenal cast and crew,” says Gallagher.
The film is produced by Grace Odumosu (Minding ) for Keeper Pictures, with Yvonne Donohoe and Katie Holly serving as executive producers.
An Mháthair is funded by TG4, Fís Éireann/Screen Ireland and Northern Irish Screen’s Irish Language Broadcast Fund as part of the Ceim Eile funding scheme.
Céim Eile is a half-hour, Short Film Script Initiative launched in 2024. An Mháthair is the first project to shoot from the second iteration of the initiative and underlines Fís Éireann/Screen Ireland, the ILBF and TG4’s ongoing commitment to developing strength and depth in Irish language film making.
An Mháthair premieres on Thursday, July 9, at 4pm in the Town Hall Theatre as part of the TG4/Screen Ireland Gearrscannáin: Tús & Céim Eile Showcase.
