Slimming World members across Galway, Tuam, Claregalway, and Killannin have once again demonstrated the power of community spirit, raising more than €16,000 for the Irish Cancer Society through this year’s Big Slimming World Clothes Throw.
The annual fundraising initiative encourages members to donate clothing they have slimmed out of during their weight-loss journeys. The clothes are then recycled, with proceeds supporting the vital work of the Irish Cancer Society.
Linda Arnold, who runs Slimming World groups at the Clybaun Hotel and in Killannin, praised the generosity of her members and the enthusiasm they showed in supporting the campaign. “This event is about much more than donating clothes,” she said. “It celebrates the achievements of our members while helping to raise much-needed funds for a charity that provides invaluable support to people affected by cancer.”
Carmel Quinn, consultant for the Tuam and Claregalway groups, echoed those sentiments. “Every week, I am inspired by the commitment and determination of our members as they work towards their weight-loss goals. I was overwhelmed by the number of bags filled with clothes they no longer need and were happy to donate to such an important cause.”
The initiative also highlights the link between maintaining a healthy weight and reducing the risk of developing certain types of cancer. Maura O’Connor, who runs groups at the Menlo Park Hotel, said the campaign helps raise awareness while supporting life-saving research and services.
“Research shows that losing weight and maintaining a healthy weight can help prevent a number of health conditions, including some types of cancer. The work of the Irish Cancer Society is vital, and I am incredibly proud of our members for their passion and generosity, and I know their contributions will help the charity continue its life-saving research,” she said.
Last year, Slimming World groups nationwide raised €229,475 through the Clothes Throw campaign, and organisers hope this year’s total will be even higher.
