Renowned Welsh Choir brings stirring harmonies to Galway

Galway audiences are in for a rare musical treat this June as an acclaimed Welsh Choir arrives for two special performances, promising an evening of rich harmony, emotional depth and unforgettable sound. Rooted in a centuries old tradition, Welsh choirs are celebrated worldwide for their warmth, power and precision. This visiting ensemble, Meibion Goronwy [The Sons of Goronwy - one of the 18th century's most notable and influential figures in Welsh-language culture] captures that spirit at its finest – blending voices with a seamless unity that can swell from a whisper to a spine-tingling crescendo in a single breath.

Their programme will reflect a vibrant musical tapestry, moving effortlessly across genres. From beloved traditional melodies and classical choral works to contemporary pieces and unexpected favourites, the Choir’s versatility ensures something to delight every listener. Each song is delivered with much gusto and enthusiasm and a deep connection to storytelling through music.

Welsh choral singing is often described as the sound of community itself – voices joining not just in harmony but in shared feeling. That sense of togetherness is at the heart of these performances, creating an atmosphere that is as uplifting as it is moving.

Whether you are a lifelong lover of choral music or simply seeking a memorable night out, these concerts promise an experience that will resonate long after the final note fades.

In keeping with the spirit of community that lies at the heart of choral singing, 50% of all proceeds from these concerts will be donated to Galway Hospice, supporting the vital care and compassion it provides to individuals and families across the region.

The concerts take place on Thursday 11th June at The Ardilaun Hotel, Salthill at 7.30pm, and Friday 12th June at Bearna Church at 8pm. Tickets are €15 and available on the door on the night, from reception at Galway Hospice, Renmore, or online at galwayhospice.ie/shop Meibion Goronwy is a Welsh male voice choir founded in 2016 in Benllech, on Anglesey. It was created to revive and promote the tradition of male choral singing within the local community.

Since 2017, the choir has been led by musical director Dafydd Jones, with accompaniment from Rhian Lloyd Jones. Under their guidance, it has grown in membership and reputation.

The choir performs bilingually with a mix of traditional Welsh hymns, popular songs, and modern choral pieces, often featuring soloists from within the group. The choir regularly organises concerts across North Wales and has also performed further afield, including in England and Ireland.
