Young creatives are being invited to explore storytelling through printmaking in Memory Lines: Print, Connect, Belong — a unique series of lino-print workshops led by Galway-based artist Róisín Doherty, culminating in a large-scale collaborative artwork at Fr Burke Park as part of Cruinniú na nÓg 2026.
Designed for children aged 9–12, the free workshops invite participants to carve and print small symbols inspired by place, memory and belonging.
Through lino-cut techniques, mark-making and stamping, young people will create tactile “memory lines” reflecting their connection to Galway’s landscapes, communities and environment.
The first workshop takes place on May 31 from 12pm to 1.30pm at Galway Arts Centre, where participants will be introduced to lino printing while designing and carving symbolic images inspired by their own experiences of place and community.
Drawing on Doherty’s practice — rooted in landscape, found objects and traces of lived experience — the session encourages children to reflect creatively on the natural and built environment around them while producing multiple printed impressions of their designs.
The project will culminate on June 6 at Fr Burke Park during Cruinniú na nÓg. From 12pm to 1.30pm, participants from the preparatory workshop will continue printing and begin assembling their work into collaborative “memory lines” inspired by the textures and rhythms of the Atlantic shoreline, from shells and stones to shifting tides and winds.
From 1.30pm to 6pm, families and members of the public will also be invited to drop in and contribute to the installation through the use of stamps, helping to create a celebratory public artwork shaped by the wider community.
Originally from Cruit Island in Donegal and now based in Galway, Doherty is a multidisciplinary artist whose work combines drawing, painting, photography, sound and found objects. A recent graduate of ATU Galway’s MA in Creative Practice, she has exhibited nationally and internationally and is actively involved in collaborative and community arts projects across the west of Ireland.
