A forty-foot shipping container will appear in Eyre Square this summer, but within it is the cabin of an Airbus 320.
Passengers who board will be unaware of destination.
“Ladies and gentlemen, we’d like to direct your attention to the on-board safety demonstration and ask that you give us your full attention.
“In the unlikely event of a sudden loss of cabin pressure alternative scenarios will be provided. Next of kin will be provided. Additional desserts will be provided. An extra pillow. Trumpets and gongs.
“Neither Heaven nor Hell is assured. We’re not responsible for your final destination."
This profound new experience coming to Galway International Arts Festival this July explores the thin veil between alternate realities.
It is an immersive work that plunges audience members into a living thought experiment: two worlds, two paths and two distinct outcomes. Flight, from the innovative creators of immersive experiences, Darkfield, posits that in the infinite landscape of the multiverse, there are many worlds in which this plane lands safely.
Darkfield is world-renowned for its unique combination of cutting-edge, 360 degree binaural sound, sensory effects and complete darkness to create immersive experiences, situating participants at the centre of intense, evolving narratives.
Having toured extensively throughout Britain, North America, Asia and Australia, this marks the company’s Irish premiere for the critically acclaimed Flight, which has won five-star reviews.
“Darkfield is one of the most inventive companies creating work in the UK today. Flight is one of a series of shows they have created inside converted shipping containers,” says Paul Fahy, GIAF artistic director. “In this instance, audiences are welcomed into a fully realistic aircraft cabin. The level of detailed visual and audio design is exemplary, making for a unique festival experience.”
Darkfield Artistic Directors, David Rosenberg and Glen Neath, commented: “We’ve wanted to bring one of our containers to Ireland for a long time, so we’re absolutely thrilled to be coming to Galway International Arts Festival with Flight. Having presented our work across the world, we know how much audiences enjoy the worlds we create, so we’re very excited to welcome Irish audiences to experience Flight.”
