If you are looking for an outdoor, water-based adventure and sailing activities to fill your children’s summer days, Galway Bay Sailing Club is ready to inspire young sailors. With courses tailored for beginners from 7 years old right through to advanced sailing for teenagers that combine fun, safety, and skill-building, there is something for everyone.
Irish camps for secondary school students
These unique, week-long camps, starting on Monday, June 8 and Monday, June 15, are split between Senior and Junior secondary school students and are taught entirely through Irish. There will be an Irish class each morning, with printed booklets that can support speaking Irish and can be used right the way through to Leaving Cert.
Those preparing for their Leaving Cert will focus on how to prepare for the Irish oral exam with a Department of Education Oral Irish Examiner, while Junior Cert camps will focus on building confidence in speaking Irish. Phrases, nouns, and verbs taught during the hour-and-a-half morning class can be used throughout the day for all shore- and water-based activities.
The team of fluent, Irish-speaking instructors and leaders will be on hand to support, ensuring that only Irish is spoken, because they just love to labhairt as Gaeilge!
Galway Bay Sailing Club, in partnership with An Bruach Thoir, Gaeltacht an Eachréidh, Galway City Council and Galway County Council, is delighted to invite applications for ‘Gaeilge Chois Trá’ part-funded scholarships.
Email [email protected] for information. Bookings can be secured with a non-refundable deposit of €50.
Irish Camps for national school students
Galway Bay Sailing Club is also offering a sailing camp completely in Irish for national school students, with morning and evening sessions available, from Saturday, July 6, to Monday, July 8.
Here, children will learn the basics of sailing, practice Irish through play while building their vocabulary naturally, and gain confidence outside the classroom.
Irish Sailing Association Summer Camps at Galway Bay Sailing Club
“Sailing for children offers profound benefits; it fosters confidence, independence and resilience while teaching teamwork and environmental awareness”.
The Cara na Mara junior sailing programme is designed for young sailors aged seven to eleven and aims to give children a positive introduction to a lifelong sport.
This is a story-driven programme for kids, where sailors get the opportunity to explore, imagine and discover the water, sailing and sea creatures in a safe and supportive environment.
Through games, storytelling and time afloat, children can build confidence on and around the water while learning to work together, ask questions and enjoy being part of a sailing community.
Camps for teenagers
For teenagers interested in Summer Sailing Courses and becoming a qualified sailor, the Irish Sailing pathway programme offers a set of progressive courses, from level one to level four sailing camps, designed specifically for teenage sailors, teaching essential sailing techniques and water safety in a fun, engaging way while fostering teamwork and problem-solving skills.
Guided by certified instructors, this English-speaking camp provides a safe, supportive learning environment, so you can feel confident that your child is in great hands as they embark on an exciting journey filled with growth, friendship, and unforgettable memories.
