Independent Councillor Terry O’Flaherty has allocated funding from her Local Improvement Scheme Fund (LIS ) towards resurfacing and widening of the footpaths within the park between Monivea Park and Meadow Grove, Ballybane.
The park is a regularly used shortcut, particularly by the Monivea Park residents, to access shops, schools and the church
Councillor O’Flaherty said that following complaints about the state of the footpath from a number of residents who frequent the park on a daily basis, she gave a commitment during the 2024 local election that if re-elected she would make every effort to have the necessary works carried out in this area.
“Due to the narrowness of the current footpath, pedestrians sometimes have to walk on the grass, which can be very messy when it’s raining.
“Arising out of this, I met with one of the City Council’s Parks engineers recently and, having walked the area, it was agreed that the width of the narrow footpath would be increased to a metre.”
Councillor O’Flaherty said that she had recently received an email from the Parks Department stating that, unfortunately, the weather had been very wet since the works had been agreed.
It advised her that “it wouldn’t be advisable to bring machinery into the green areas at the moment, as it could damage the surrounding soil. I’ll let you know as soon as I have a confirmed date for when works on the walkway can begin.”
The Independent City East Councillor said that she looked forward to seeing the works undertaken in the near future. “This will be welcomed by all those who walk this lovely park,” she added.
