A recital to music of poetry by Seán Ó Ríordáin will be hosted at An Taibhdhearc this Saturday, April 18, at 8pm.
At the intersection where music meets poetry, this special recital features text by Ó Ríordáin set by composers Seóirse Bodley, Mícheál Ó Súilleabháin and Gerard Victory.
The poems will be recited and described by Professor Louis De Paor, then be sung by members of the Galway Baroque Singers.
Many of these choral works have never been performed before, and this special feature is based on the MA thesis of conductor Peter Mannion, after he found these scores in archives, and examined the relationship between the texts and music.
Mannion is a graduate of the music stream in the Irish Studies MA programme at the University of Galway.
This special feature will be the first all as gaeilge recital performed by the Galway Baroque Singers.
Expect poetry, in depth analysis and wonderful demonstrations of music and song from Ireland's leading composers celebrating the words of Seán Ó Ríordáin.
From Cúl an Tí to Siollabadh, these well-known poems are presented in this unique event in An Taibhdhearc, the first time such a presentation has been presented by an Irish choir.
Galway Baroque Singers was formed by Audrey Corbett in 1983 to provide opportunities for singers and audiences in Galway to experience the joy of choral music.
The choir’s repertoire ranges from the 16th century to the present day, and includes oratorios, Masses, requiems, glorias, magnificats and lighter choral repertoire, including the great musicals. Pete Mannion undertook conducting duties in 2022.
The recital will take place in An Taibhdhearc Theatre on Saturday, April 18, at 8pm.
